A balanced world of sounds, subtly equilibrated between sensitivity and power.
The irresistible expressive power, the stylistic openness and almost unmeasurable diversity of music by Isfar Sarabskis has opened in the meantime the doors to the great stages of the world to the pianist, composer and arranger, born 1989 in Baku. His work oscillates between filigree intros and whole pieces, supported by the quiet to refined chamber music meanderings to powerfully pulsating, rhythm-emphasized sound; it shines continuously with beautiful, immaculate melodiosity and emotional capacity. Isfar Sarbaski is a jack of all trades, who does not set limits to himself and who lets effortlessly homeland-like with arabic, classic and solid jazz traditions melt for his very own language.

Isfar Sarabski is a pianist from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The country with its neighbors Turkey, Russia and Iran has always been exposed to very different cultural influences. The Azerbaijani tradition of mugham music is located between Persian and Arabic music.

Sarabski, born in 1989, bows to this by adding the long-necked lute Tar to his brilliant jazz trio. Sarabski studied in Baku and Boston, in 2009 he won the Solo Piano Competition of the Montreux Jazz Festival - at the age of 19.

Since then he has developed into a kind of Eurasian Brad Mehldau - a pianist who leaves open mouths and audiences roaring with enthusiasm when he performs. Sarabski is able to quote Tchaikovsky and Coltrane with ease, only to fall seamlessly into a mighty blues. Demanding and serious, but also groovy and rousing. Isfar Sarabski plays with the power of GoGo Penguin and the classic virtuosity of Lang Lang.

Adored in his country Azerbaijan as much as by Quincy Jones, the pianist Isfar Sarabski causes a sensation wherever he goes, as much for his virtuosity as for his perpetual quest for new musical experiences. In 2009, at the age of 19, he won the Montreux Jazz Festival piano competition with his phenomenal interpretation of Bill Evans' compositions. A formidable transmitter of emotions, the young thirty-something likes working with the electronic scene of his country but it is indeed to jazz that he devotes his work Planet today. For this album, Isfar Sarabski surrounded himself with bassist Alan Hampton and drummer Mark Guliana. A trio which sublimates the compositions of the pianist and his lyricism perpetually under rhythmic tension. An ecstatic jazz and a cosmic swing where traditional and classical music mingle with infinite grace when the three musicians are joined by the tar (Persian lute) of Shahriyar Imanov or the strings of the Baku Strings Quartet.

As the founder of the genre Mugham-Jazz, Vagif Mustafazadeh (1940-1979) plays a special role in Azerbaijani music history. In his young years he experimented with various musical styles and was able to develop his own style of improvisational music. Although jazz music was frowned upon in the Soviet Union at the time as a value of Western society, he became famous beyond the borders of his country during his lifetime.
Today's jazz scene owes much to him and most artists see him as their source of inspiration. Isfar Sarabski renowned jazz artists and European rising start will perform works by Vagif Mustafazadeh as well as his own compositions with his virtuous quartet.

Isfar Sarabski is just about to be discovered in Germany. In spring 2020 he will make his debut at two interesting locations: the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. And in the winter of music.
Do you remember Aziza Mustafa Zadeh? In 1994 she was a guest in the music winter. A fascinating woman and a gifted pianist. In her virtuoso playing she regularly introduces vocal lines, set pieces of traditional songs from her Azerbaijani homeland. It was her father who started to combine traditional Persian-Iranian improvisations with jazz back in the 1950s. He, the legendary pianist Vagif Mustafa Zadeh, is considered the father of jazz on the Caspian Sea. A new generation of musicians is now confidently building on this rich tradition. Isfar Sarabski is her most prominent representative. He also feels committed to the tradition of his home country Azerbaijan; he prefers to integrate the long-necked tar into his concerts. Sarabski is a gifted virtuoso. At the age of 19, he won the solo piano competition of the Montreux Jazz Festival. In the meantime he has developed into a kind of "Eurasian Brad Mehldau" (NDR). In his appearances, he regularly triggers amazement and storms of enthusiasm. It is an integral part of the festival scene in Asia, the Arab world, Europe and the USA. He performed with the "Herbie Hancock & Friends" formation in Paris, where he was awarded the "International Jazz Day Award".

The origins of jazz-mugham, a unique fusion of traditional styles of Persian- Iranian improvisation with jazz, date back to Azerbaijani pianist Vagif Mustafazede in the 1950s. Today, Sarabski is one of Mustafazede most prominent followers. Along with Behruz Zeynal, who introduces the sounds of tar, a Persian string instrument, this project takes the audience to sonorities rarely heard in a jazz concert.

Royal Albert Hall (London), Porgy & Bess Jazz Club (Vienna).

A prominent Tunisian oud player and singer, Dhafer Youssef’s evocative and intricate sound combines traditional Arabic music and jazz influences. Recruiting three stellar American musicians for his 4tet, Dhafer Youssef’s gig will feature tracks from his critically acclaimed Diwan of Beauty and Odd (2016). An elaborately embroidered tapestry of sound, Diwan combines oriental influences and the urban groove of New York. Dhafer’s genius lies in composing music that transcends social and music divisions.

« Diwan Of Beauty And Odd » nous emporte, évoque l’envol, la transe.

2017 May 28Cycle (with Rain Sultanov)Dnepr, Ukraine

2017 May 23Cycle (with Rain Sultanov)Stockholm, Sweden

The Cycle

Very often while listening to music we think about something personal. We recall images from our past or present, sometimes illusions and dreams take shape of short moving pictures.  They can be vivid or not, black and white or have vague shape. When listening to music we reflect, contemplate and travel in time and space.

"The Cycle" is not just a music project. It is interesting due to its content. Three instruments which have not been used before in combination are magically merged in one theme. Organ, saxophone and piano. They are a perfect combination and harmony in space. Each instrument brings its own philosophy in. Organ - divinity, saxophone - emotions, piano - evolution.

Organ as the basis of life, given from above, reminds about faith. It acts as the peacemaker, wizard, which the listener recalls with a pounding heart.  It explains the reasons and calms down bursting expression of the saxophone. The saxophone, like the life itself, raises questions. Saxophone demonstrates phases, cycles, creating subtle improvisations on the theme of existence. Piano supports the saxophone. It is like a friend or companion that is always around, helps to understand and sometimes also questions. Unison of these three instruments is, probably, the best discovery made by the musicians.
